How to Plan for Your Success
Hello nurse friends! Today, I’m going to teach you about WHY we overeat in the heat of a stressful moment (maybe we are rushing to give meds, maybe we are working short-staffed, maybe we are handling an interpersonal conflict). You see, there are two important things you need to know about your brain when it comes to permanent weight loss. There is:
1) Your “Primitive Brain”
2) Your “Planning Brain”
Your Primitive Brain Is the part of your brain that has been useful back in the day when we were cavemen. This is the part of our brains that told us that we needed to avoid pain, seek pleasure, and conserve energy (also known as the “Motivational Triad”) in order to conserve our human species!
The problem is, this Primitive Brain is still working now-a-days, when we no longer live in caves. In fact, we don’t even need to hunt. All the food we need is literally available right at our finger tips. But our brains don’t know that. All it knows is that when we eat foods that are highly concentrated in sugar and flour, we get a huge dopamine hit that our Primitive Brain believes is necessary for survival. So it tells you to literally eat more and more of it until you have diabetes, cancer, and other long-term illnesses.
On the other hand, here’s where our Planning Brain comes in. Our Planning Brain is what allows us to evolve as a species. It’s where our goals, dreams, & visions come from. This is what I call acting from our “truest self” because this is the part of your brain that is in alignment with what you want to achieve.
In order to access our Planning Brain, we have to… plan! We can do this with what we eat by a simple technique that can help free your mind from any food cravings, stress eating, and more. Here’s the deal:
Plan every single thing you are going to eat 24 hours in advance.
That is right. Literally every single thing you are going to eat. If you plan what you will eat at least 24 hours in advance, you are accessing the Planning Brain because you are making a plan in advance that is in alignment with your weight loss goals.
On the other hand, if you do not plan, chances are that you will be eating as a reaction from your Primitive Brain. Your Primitive Brain is literally like a toddler that is running wildly around the grocery store. It is going to see food and want to eat all the candies, chocolates, and cookies. It is going to scream for that food. It is going to yell for that food. And to keep that part of your brain quiet, you are going to want to give in and FEED it!
But this is how you continue to gain weight and never stay in alignment with your weight loss goals.
Remember — everything you eat must be planned 24 hours in advance, or else your mind will not be guided and it will be faced with too many decisions to eat in the moment, and it will likely want to just eat the thing that makes it feel better right away (e.g. food with high amounts of sugar or flour).
Planning ahead reduces decision fatigue which will allow your brain to conserve energy and not obsess about wanting to eat something unhealthy.
